Managing and okay aren't the same thing.
Most people who come in for individual therapy aren't in crisis. They're functioning. Work is fine, relationships are intact, the routine holds. The issue is subtler: something underneath isn't right, and they've been trying to think their way past it for a while. That's where we start.
What the work actually looks like.
You're paying for real therapy, not to spend the first session on administrative intake. From the beginning, we're having an actual conversation: where you are now, what's making it hard, what you've already tried. I ask direct questions and expect direct answers. By the end of the hour, you'll know whether this is a fit.
I work bottom-up. Most people come in with insight. They understand their patterns, sometimes with clinical precision. What they haven't figured out is how to shift them. Understanding why you do something and actually changing it are two different operations. The work here is aimed at the second one.
I keep a small caseload. You get a therapist who has actually thought about your case between sessions. That's not universal in therapy. It should be.
What people come in for.
There's no required presenting problem. Some common ones:
- Anxiety that lives in the body: the constant bracing, the low-level dread without an obvious cause
- Burnout that rest hasn't fixed. Because it's not about rest.
- A pattern that keeps showing up across relationships, jobs, situations
- High performance with a hollow feeling underneath it
- A history that's been managed rather than actually worked through
- A vague sense of being stuck, without a clear reason why
If you can't quite name what's wrong, that's fine. Most people come in with something vague. We can usually find it within the first session or two.
A significant number of my individual therapy clients are men. Often professionals who've resisted therapy or had a bad experience with it before. If that's you, the approach here is different. No worksheets, no passive listening, no vague reflection. Direct conversation, real work.

Things people usually want to know before they reach out.
If the pattern is showing up in your relationship, couples therapy can run alongside or instead of individual work.
If substance use is part of what's happening, I hold an LCAS license and can work with that directly in individual sessions.
If you're weighing private pay against insurance, this post explains the tradeoffs.
If your work is a significant part of what you're carrying, the therapy for professionals page goes deeper on that specific pattern.
